The science behind the BMR calculator
Show the formulas, method and sources
BMR is basal metabolic rate, the energy your body uses at rest for breathing, circulation and keeping warm. The tool uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, and it also shows the revised Harris-Benedict result so you can compare the two.
Formulas
Mifflin-St Jeor (1990)
Men: BMR = 10 x weight (kg) + 6.25 x height (cm) - 5 x age (years) + 5Women: BMR = 10 x weight (kg) + 6.25 x height (cm) - 5 x age (years) - 161
Revised Harris-Benedict (Roza and Shizgal, 1984)
Men: BMR = 88.362 + 13.397 x weight (kg) + 4.799 x height (cm) - 5.677 x age (years)Women: BMR = 447.593 + 9.247 x weight (kg) + 3.098 x height (cm) - 4.330 x age (years)
How it works, step by step
- First, the calculator converts your height and weight to centimeters and kilograms.
- Then it applies both equations for your sex and age.
- Finally, it shows the Mifflin-St Jeor value as your headline, rounded to the nearest 10 calories.
Worked example
For a 30-year-old man who is 180 cm tall and weighs 80 kg, Mifflin-St Jeor gives 1,780 calories a day. The revised Harris-Benedict equation also gives about 1,854, which comes to roughly 4% more.
Accuracy and limits
Mifflin and colleagues measured resting energy use in 498 healthy adults and fitted their equation to the data. In that group, the original 1919 Harris-Benedict equations still overestimated measured values by 5%.
Roza and Shizgal revised the Harris-Benedict equations in 1984, and they reported a precision of plus or minus 14% for normally nourished people. Meanwhile, a 2005 systematic review found that Mifflin-St Jeor landed within 10% of measured rate for more people than the other common equations.
The reference standard is a lab test called indirect calorimetry, which measures the oxygen you use at rest. Because that test needs equipment, most people rely on an equation instead.
- BMR covers rest only. Since a normal day burns more, use the TDEE calculator for meal planning.
- In the original study, fat-free mass was the best single predictor of resting burn, but this equation leaves it out.
- The studies included few older adults, so treat results for that group with extra caution.

Questions people ask
What is the difference between BMR and TDEE?
BMR is the energy you use at rest. TDEE adds your movement and exercise on top. Because you do not spend the day lying still, TDEE is the number to use for meal planning.
Which BMR equation is the most accurate?
A 2005 systematic review found Mifflin-St Jeor the most reliable of the four common equations it compared. It landed within 10% of measured resting rate for more people than the others. So it is the headline result.
Can I eat at my BMR to lose weight?
If you plan meals, treat your BMR as a floor. It leaves out everything you burn by moving, so it is a very low target for most people. If you want to eat below it, talk to a clinician first. The calorie calculator on this site never suggests a loss target under your BMR.
Does BMR change with age?
Yes. In the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, each extra year of age lowers the estimate by 5 calories a day, while more weight or height raises it. That is why two people with different ages and sizes get different results.
Does muscle change my BMR?
It can. In the original study, fat-free mass was the best single predictor of resting burn. This calculator uses weight instead, so it cannot see your muscle. If you carry more muscle than average, you may burn more than the estimate says.
